Stage 1: map

From Raito to Maiori

Section 1: Directions

  • Amalfi hiking trail stage 1 starting point in Raito

Bus connection to Raito

The first stage of our Amalfi hiking trail begins in Raito, a small village a few kilometers west of Salerno, approx. 150 meters above the coastal town of "Vietri sul Mare".
There are several bus connections from Salerno to Raito, but mostly only one direct connection without changing trains per hour (journey time approx. 15 min). The bus tickets cannot be purchased on the bus itself, but must first be bought in one of the numerous "Tabacchi" shops (recognizable by the sign with the big T), a kiosk or a bar. It is therefore advisable to get the bus tickets at the latest the evening before and to find out about the departure times. The departure times can be called up, for example, using the following link (starting stop in Salerno on Via Roma approximately at the height of the cathedral):

As of January, bus line 001 runs 2019 directly to Raito without changing trains and turns there again (may differ on Sundays and public holidays). Other bus connections require a change or a longer walk up to Raito, which lengthens the hike accordingly.

Attention: In Italy it is common for passengers to wave the bus over. It is not enough to just stand at the bus stop at the time of departure. You should signal to the bus by waving that you want to ride.

Facts about the 1 stage

Refreshments between Raito and Maiori

There are no places to stop for refreshments on the way, but there are two small supermarkets in Raito, which can freshly fill rolls on request.

The beautiful view in the middle of nature begins just above Raito

The entrance gate of the "Santuario di Maria Santissima Avvocata sopra Maiori" in the fog

entry point

Our hike begins at the small church in Raito: opposite the church, a staircase leads up to the right of the well-decorated fountain. The walled staircase leads us quickly up and out of the village. On the left we see the slope that we still have to overcome in the course of the morning. After approx. 20 minutes we reach a transverse high path (waypoint 1), which we follow to the left into the village of "Albori".

From Albori to the saddle point at Monte Falerio

In Albori we walk down past the church, left past the turning platform (waypoint 2) onto a path that is marked in red and white (the official signposting of the "Club Alpino Italiano" for this part of the hike is "CAI-303" "). Approximately 15 minutes to Albori we reach a fork at a water point (waypoint 3). Here we take the path to the top right.
The path takes us more or less in a direct line up to the saddle point (waypoint 4) next to Monte Falerio (from Raito after approx. 2 hours).

Via the Cappella Vecchia to the Santuario della Madonna Avvocata

From the waypoint 4 we follow the ridge in a northwesterly direction and gain a few more meters of altitude until we reach the Cappella Vecchia after about an hour at 694 meters above zero. Here we meet the CAI300 hiking trail (waypoint 5) and follow it to the left, always sideways along the slope. At the next mountain ridge at approx. 900 vertical meters, the CAI300 branches off to the right into the hinterland, but we keep left towards the coast and meet the pilgrimage church "Santuario della Madonna Avvocata" approx. 30 min after the Cappella Vecchia (waypoint 6, with full Names also "Santuario di Maria Santissima Avvocata sopra Maiori").
From here you have a great view of the coast when the weather is good - but we were in the clouds or in the fog during our hike and instead had a very mystical impression.

Descent to Maiori

To descend we leave the railing of the pilgrimage church through the archway through which we came and circle the southern tip of the small plateau. The path leads us down and after a short time meets a transverse path (waypoint 7), which we follow to the right.

In the further course of stage 1 we keep going downhill, circle another mountain ridge and then look at Maiori (approx. 2,5 hours descent from the pilgrimage church).

Rooms with great views and colorful tile patterns: Hotel Torre di Milo in Maiori

Hotel recommendation in Maiori: Hotel Torre di Milo

Maiori is far from being as sophisticated and famous as other places on the Amalfi Coast and therefore the prices in Maiori are reasonably reasonable.

We can recommend the following hotel in Maiori: Hotel Torre di Milo, The Hotel Torre di Milo offers well-kept rooms at reasonable prices, all rooms have recently renovated bathrooms and some rooms have a balcony with a view. Breakfast is outsourced to a nearby restaurant in the pedestrian zone, which is also worth a visit in the evening: In the Ristorante Pineta 1903 good cuisine is served (vegan on request), and in good weather on the cozy terrace.
